Democratic Leadership

A democratic leadership style is one where decision-making is shared between leaders and team members. Organizations that value collaboration, creativity, and innovation thrive with this style of leadership as it empowers the team members to practice “out of the box” thinking and come up with creative solutions to the challenges faced in achieving goals. Taking the initiative and open communication are both encouraged and celebrated. This leadership approach creates a more engaged and motivated team working together to achieve set goals.

Cooperation and collaboration run high within the democratic leadership style as the leader considers the opinions and skill sets of everyone involved in the process. As a result, team members feel connected to the mission and achieve a sense of ownership, innovation, and creativity. Teams of individuals with different skill sets and levels of expertise bring their unique views, concepts, and ideas to an environment where diversity of thoughts and opinions is welcomed.

Democratic leadership is an effective style for organizations and teams that require partnership. Teams that work best under this style are creative and innovative, as the leader encourages everyone to participate in the decision-making process. Teams with diverse skill sets, such as those in the arts, technology, and research, also benefit from this leadership style, as the leader values everyone’s unique perspectives and contributions.

HIGHLIGHTS AND CHALLENGES

Some of the reasons  a leader might be drawn to a democratic leadership style include

  1. Creativity – A democratic leader can create a space that celebrates and provides for innovation and creativity, whereby team members share their ideas and provide input in the decision-making process.
  2. Individual growth – When brought into the decision-making process, the empowered team member will take pride in their work and seek ways to improve their skills.
  3. Collaboration and teamwork – Sharing ideas, collaborating on projects, and being allowed to be a part of the overall processes provide team members with a sense of fellowship. Where they feel valued and respected and, as a result, are more engaged with the group.

Here are some reasons that a leader may be hesitant to use the democratic leadership style

  1. Decision paralysis – When everyone has the ability to present their ideas and opinions, the number of ideas and opinions may become overwhelming, and it could be challenging for the leader to make a decision, causing a delay for the team or project.
  2. Time-consuming – Gathering the thoughts and opinions of all the team members can be a lengthy process and can extend the time of any project.
  3. Clarity confusion – With everyone involved, the team’s overall goals and objectives can get lost in the decision-making process.

WORKING WITH A DEMOCRATIC LEADER

Being willing to be part of the decision-making process and open to ideas and suggestions is essential when working with a democratic leader. In communicating with this type of leader, it is crucial to be open, honest, and respectful. While empowered to state goals and opinions in this environment, providing clear and concise information will assist this leader in understanding your point of view. In cases of uncertainty, ask questions for clarity and provide constructive feedback to help others understand each perspective as the team works to reach the best solution or decision. Finally, indicate a willingness to collaborate to achieve the team’s goals.
