Effective Immediately Your Position is Eliminated

These six words can change your life, “Effective immediately, your position is eliminated.” How it changes your life is up to you. I had just celebrated my birthday and returned to the office from a mini-staycation after successfully launching a new department along with my leadership team and their subordinates. The entire team was performing well, and engagement was high. Equally important, bonds were forming, and trust levels had increased after a recent reorg that left many people uncertain about the future and in positions they did not select or desire. Despite it all, things were trending up, and I was excited about the team and the future. My husband and I were planning to purchase our first home as a couple. We had selected the neighborhood and looked forward to being closer to our family when all of that changed. Without any warning, my role was deemed unnecessary.

the dreaded conversation

How the conversation played out was similar to that of many other men and women worldwide—mine occurred on a Thursday at 12:20 pm via a Zoom conference call. As I listened to the scripted message about the decision to eliminate my position, mixed with words of praise concerning my performance as an employee and leader, I was shocked and not shocked all at once. I felt my heartbeat increase and my stomach drop. Part of me wanted to laugh, and part of me wanted to scream in outrage. Instead, I momentarily disengaged mentally to pray. Not for the situation to change but for me to embrace the situation, and I immediately felt God’s grace and peace as a weight lifted. I realized that as painful and unfair the situation was, my season there was up, and God was releasing me to move forward into the next stage of my professional career.

Several times during the conversation, the term “overwhelmed” was said. In my spirit, I immediately rejected those words. I wasn’t overwhelmed. I was fully aware of what was occurring. Yes, it was disheartening and frustrating to learn that I was no longer needed or valued after being a part of multiple successful initiatives, being a stellar employee, and an impactful leader for many years. No, I wasn’t overwhelmed. I was one of the 22-million workers who had lost their job due to organizational changes through no fault of their own.[1]

As I worked to wrap my head and heart around what had occurred, I remained grateful to God, my Lord, and Savior for his faithfulness and provision. As I processed my emotions, took stock of my mindset, financial state, and looked to the future, I understood that my value does not diminish because someone fails to recognize my worth. By the grace of God, I am not angry, nor do I hold any animosity or ill will against anyone. I wish them peace of mind and continued success.

LEAVING A LEGACY

The skills I have honed will continue to serve me and others well as I embark on future endeavors. Yes, at times, I questioned what the future held, but I also felt a sense of freedom and excitement. Freedom to speak out on those things that I deem important and against things that devalue, limit, stifle, and suppress others. I am reminded of how God has opened the door to some amazing learning opportunities. My understanding of what leadership should look like in action has deepened. My compassion towards others has expanded, and my determination to ensure that I leave a legacy of helping others lead with strength and grace has been solidified. I am not overwhelmed. I am WOKE and FREE to be authentic as I walk boldly in my truth, head held high, with my honor and integrity intact. Yes, I am bravely going into the future, fully embracing what life has in store as my prayers come to pass and my dreams come to life. I am excited to explore business opportunities with organizations that bring me joy, energy, and the continued fulfillment of my purpose.
