I began my journey in higher education as a work-study study student in the student support center at Indiana University Northwest in Gary, Indiana. I was fortunate enough to be surrounded by strong black women with Ph.D. degrees running departments within the university. My mentor Dr. Ige was a phenomenal professor who challenged me as a student and a professional. From the outside, it looked perfect, but over time, I came to realize that their climb to the top was not as easy as it appeared. Later in life, I entered into higher education as an adjunct and advanced to Program Chair and later Academic Dean. During those times, I found champions, detractors, and mentors. The industry of Higher Education is not exempt when it comes to the challenges WOC face. I hope that this panel discussion will empower others to take a closer look at how they can help dismantle some of the limiting beliefs held about WOC in higher education and create positive, sustainable change. In 2019, 1,832 Black women received Ph.Ds. Of those, 522 had an academic job placement. Just 2.7 percent of all academic job placements in 2019 were of Black women with Ph.Ds.’

Dr. Chemene Crawford, President of North Seattle College
For more than thirty years, Dr. Crawford has served as a higher education professional. Currently, she serves as President and CEO of North Seattle College. Previously, Dr. Crawford served as an Associate Vice Chancellor for the Dallas County Community College District. Other previous positions include Vice President of Student Services and Enrollment Management, Vice President of Student Affairs, Vice President of Administrative Operations, Dean of Student Affairs, and Director of Student Financial Services. She also worked for approximately 10 years in the California Community College system. Her academic accomplishments include a Doctor of Education degree in Organizational Leadership from Nova Southeastern University, a Master of Human Resources and Organization Development (M.H.R.O.D.) degree in Human Resources and Organization Development, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Organizational Behavior, both from the University of San Francisco.

Tretha Harris, Founder, and CEO at T Sirrah Consulting
Tretha is an award-winning higher education practitioner with 12 plus years in higher education. Her expertise is in creating inclusive, collaborative, and high-performing environments in enrollment management. She currently serves as Vice President of the Texas Association of Criminal Justice Educators, Chair of the Community College Section of Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences, Vice President of the North Texas Council of College and University Registrar and Admissions Officers, and Research Co-Lead for Two Year College Advising Community with NACADA. Tretha earned a double Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science and Criminal Justice from Southern Mississippi University. She has a Master’s degree from the University of Massachusetts- Lowell in Criminal Justice with an emphasis in Forensic Criminology. She also completed post-graduate studies at Harvard University.
Dr. Karen Stills, Associate Vice Chancellor of Student Services at Dallas College
With over 20 years of experience, Dr. Karen Stills is an equity-minded leader whose career has been dedicated to illuminating education as a vehicle for hope and opportunity to the communities she serves. Dr. Stills currently serves as the Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Success at Dallas College, providing leadership for a team of more than 300 student success practitioners focusing on success coaching, career development, pathway success, and strategic initiatives to strengthen student persistence, completion, and transfer. Dr. Stills earned a Bachelor’s in business management from the University of New Orleans, an MBA from Amberton University, and a doctorate in educational leadership from San Diego State University. In addition, Dr. Stills is a proud mom, a Saints football enthusiast, and a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
